MERMAID TIPS

Grow A Garden

Grow a vegetable garden right in your backyard. It is not only good for you but also good for your soul and the environment. First of all, you are cutting back on the carbon emissions it takes to take your car to the store to buy vegetables. Upon starting your own vegetable garden, you will notice that once you eat your first crops, they taste much more delicious and flavorful than store bought vegetables! That is because they were grown without the use of hormones and chemicals used to grow vegetables quickly to feed a large population.

Growing a garden is a fun family activity.  It teaches kids valuable lessons like how our actions,  'planting seeds' in life just like in the garden effect change. When we nurture, have patience and give love they grow. Did I mention the satisfaction that comes from knowing that you were able to grow your own nutritious food right in your backyard? You are independently helping yourself and the planet.

Educate Others

Everything you do towards helping the environment at home counts. Our planet gives so much to us every single day, we must take care of it and give back. To make an even bigger difference, we need to get more people involved. Imagine everyone doing what you've been doing at home! Tell your friends about the steps you've taken! How you've been picking up after yourself at the beach, conserving water and electricity, how you've been riding your bike, gardening, volunteering, reducing, reusing and recycling. Get them excited and help get more people involved! When you tell your friends, it becomes a chain reaction. They will tell their friends, and their friends will tell their friends and so on. Before you know it, everyone will be working together and our planet can become an even better place to live!

In the words of Mahatma Ghandi, "You must be the change you want to see in the world."

Volunteer

There are many things you can do in your daily life that can contribute to making our planet a better place, you can join larger groups of people to cover larger areas. Volunteering means offering your assistance at no cost to help the greater good. Throughout the world and in your hometown, there are hundreds of organizations and charities with specific focuses that you can volunteer for. Whether it's volunteering for a beach clean up, animal rescue or a homeless shelter, your help can always be used somewhere.

Beach clean-ups happen regularly if you live in a seaside town, and extra sets of hands can always be used. Beach Clean-Ups not only make the beach look nicer, but since many people are not as environmentally conscious as you, we need to make sure that trash does not get into the hands or mouths of small children and/or the animals that live there! Animals on the shore might mistake a plastic wrapper for food, eat it and get very sick. The tide can also pull in unwanted trash that large animals can swallow and get hurt from, such as fish or dolphins or even whales!

Don't want to go alone? Encourage your friends to volunteer with you! The more people helping, the better our world can be. Don't know which organization to choose? What are your interests? Do you like to build, garden, sell, clean...just go to the Internet and research!
